What is La Liga?

The Campeonato Nacional de Liga de Primera División, better known simply as La Liga, is the premier league of Spanish soccer, where the best Spanish teams play each season. Throughout the season, the top twenty clubs in the country play against one another as they compete for the right to be crowned champions.

Following the 2025/26 season, Barcelona are the current champions, with the Catalan club winning their 29th league title.

Over the years, La Liga has been regarded as one of the strongest leagues in Europe. Many of the world’s best players have played in La Liga, including greats such as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

History of La Liga

The national Spanish professional soccer league was first proposed in 1928. However, disagreements over which teams should take part resulted in a split between two leagues. Eventually, the Royal Spanish Football Federation agreed on ten teams to take part in the inaugural season of the national league, which began in 1929.

Barcelona won the inaugural season, but over the years, more teams were founded and added to La Liga as the Spanish football leagues grew. Since its inception, 62 teams have competed in La Liga, with 9 teams crowned as champions.

Today, La Liga is the top of the five levels of professional soccer in Spain and is contested between 20 teams each season. Real Madrid and Barcelona have won the most titles in the history of the league.

Format of the 2026-27 La Liga

La Liga features twenty teams that all play one another in home and away fixtures. This round-robin format means that every club plays 38 games throughout the season, making 380 games in total.

Teams receive three points for a win, one point for a draw, and zero points for a loss. These points are used to rank the teams in a table. At the end of the season, the top team is crowned the champions. Meanwhile, the bottom three teams are relegated to the Segunda Division, while the top three teams from the Segunda are promoted.

Aside from winning the league, teams compete to survive and earn a chance to play in European competitions. The top 4 teams in La Liga will get to join the league phase of the elite UEFA Champions League the following season, while the 5th-placed team will qualify for the Europa League league phase. Finally, the 6th-placed team will qualify for the Conference League playoff round.

When does the 2026-27 La Liga season start

The La Liga 2026/27 season kicks off on 15 August 2026 and ends on 30 May 2027. La Liga also features a winter break from 20 December to 3 January.

La Liga title race and winner odds

La Liga outright winner odds show you which team is favourite to lift the title. These odds can change throughout the season based on current league position, match form, injuries and managerial changes.

Barcelona are the current champions and begin the season as the favourites to defend their title according to the La Liga winner odds. They’ve won the title 3 out of the last 4 seasons and have added Spain international Rodri to their squad. However, they’ve also lost the goal-scoring presence of Lewandowski, who has transferred to the MLS.

Barcelona’s main rivals, Real Madrid, are entering a new era following the departure of head coach Xabi Alonso last season. He’s been replaced by Jose Mourinho, who will enter his 2nd stint in charge of Los Blancos. Mourinho has inherited a squad with many world-class players, but getting them to play well together could be a challenge.

Meanwhile, Atletico are outside contenders according to the La Liga outright odds. They have a strong squad, but last won La Liga in the 2020/21 season. Manager Diego Simeone has brought in some quality players such as Cristian Romero, Morten Hjulmand and Kang-in Lee.

La Liga top scorer and Pichichi odds

Each season, the player with the most goals in La Liga receives the Pichichi Trophy. The award is named after Rafael Moreno Aranzadi, nicknamed Pichichi, who is one of La Liga’s most iconic players. The Pichichi odds vary throughout the season based on the current goal-scoring form, injuries and schedule of each player.

Kylian Mbappe is the clear favourite in the current La Liga top scorer odds. The Real Madrid forward has won the Pichichi in the 2 seasons he’s played in the league, bagging 25 league goals last season and 31 the season before.

Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal is the 2nd favourite in the opening odds. However, he’s far behind Mbappe. Last season, the teenager scored 16 goals, and he got 9 before that.

Also in the race for the Pichichi are Raphinha and Mikel Oyarzabal. The Barcelona forwards open the season with equal odds to secure the top scorer award. Raphinha scored 13 goals in 22 games last season, while Oyarzabal netted 15 in 34 league matches.

La Liga relegation odds

At the start of the season, newly promoted sides Malaga, Racing Santander and Deportivo La Coruña were amongst the favourites to be relegated in 2026/27. Sides promoted from the Segunda División have the highest chance of being in a relegation battle. However, Levante, Elche and Deportivo Alavés are also expected to struggle based on their opening relegation odds.

How to bet on La Liga and types of soccer betting

Betting on La Liga is the same as betting on any other soccer league. Our guide to soccer betting provides more details. However, all you have to do is follow these steps to place your first sports bets:

  1. Create an account at Stake and open the wallet to make a deposit.

  2. You can deposit using a variety of supported payment methods, including local currency and crypto.

  3. Search for a team or use the menu to find Soccer > Spain > La Liga.

  4. Look through the live and upcoming soccer matches, and choose one to see the full range of markets.

  5. Add any of the betting options to your bet slip and then enter your stake to confirm.

  6. Check back to see if your bet is a winner and cash out any winnings.

There are lots of different ways to bet on soccer at Stake. La Liga matches feature a variety of bet types to choose from. Some of the most popular match markets include:

  • 1x2 – The 1x2 betting market is a prediction of either the home team win, draw or away team win.

  • Draw no bet – Like a moneyline bet, you simply pick either side to win. In the event of a draw, your stake is returned.

  • Asian total – Bet on the total goals scored in the game or by either team, over or under a specific number. Quarter goal totals are available, giving you half your stake back if it doesn’t hit.

  • Asian handicap – This adds a goal margin to both teams. The team must overcome or avoid losing by the handicap for your bet to win.

  • Double chance – A bet on two different outcomes of the match. For example, the home team to win or a draw.

  • First goal – Which team do you predict will score the first goal of the match?

  • Correct score – Predict the final score at the end of the match.

  • Both teams to score – Bet on whether or not you think both teams will score during the match.

  • Outright – Bet on the final outcome of the season, including the title odds, which teams will be relegated and the winner of the Pichichi trophy for top goal scorer.

  • Parlay – if you want to increase your odds and potential payout, you can add multiple bets into one. This includes same-game multi bets. With this form of betting, each selection you include in the bet must win.

How to live stream soccer and live betting

Pre-match odds are offered on all La Liga soccer matches, and you can also bet live at Stake. This means you can bet on games before kick-off and get in-play betting odds too. All the main markets are available on live games, giving you a huge number of options to choose from.

At Stake, you can enjoy free live streams and watch all the action at La Liga live as it happens, giving you more information on what’s happening on the pitch before you pick your bets. If you prefer, there are also live stats and a scoreboard to give you everything you need to know when placing bets.

La Liga odds and payouts

La Liga football betting odds work the same as on any other sport at Stake. You can change the odds between decimal, fractional, or American, depending on which you prefer.

The odds will affect your payout, so before you make your picks, you should understand how sports betting odds work. Here are some examples of soccer odds to illustrate:

Decimal Odds

The decimal odds are the simplest to understand. The bigger the number, the greater the odds and the larger the potential payout. For example, in a match of Atletico Madrid to win against Malaga, Atletico are heavy favourites at 1.34 to win, while Malaga are 9.40, and the draw is 5.40.

To calculate your total payout, simply multiply the odds by your stake. So if you bet $10 on Atletico Madrid and they win, you get back $13.40 ($10 stake and $3.40 profit).

Fractional Odds

For fractional odds, you simply multiply your stake by the numerator (the top number of the fraction) before dividing the result by the denominator (the bottom number of the fraction). This gives you the profit you’ll make from winning the bet. Malaga are 42/5 underdogs, so you’d win $84 if you bet $10 on Malaga and they won the match.

American Odds

Now, let’s look at the same odds in the American odds format. For these, outcomes that have a 50% probability or higher are denoted with a - sign, while outcomes with lower than 50% probability use a + sign.

The odds themselves tell you either the amount you’d need to bet to make $100 in profit or the total profit you’d make betting $100. Atletico Madrid to win the match has odds of -294. This means that to win $100, you’d need to bet $294. The odds for Malaga to win are +840, which means you’d win $840 if you bet $100.

La Liga betting tips and strategies

It's ideal to have an understanding of the game and use the right strategies when betting on La Liga. Every season brings new drama and storylines, with star players emerging, coaches facing the sack, and teams battling to win the title or just survive.

While things might be different each season, always consider these betting strategies to improve your chances when betting on La Liga:

Form and Statistics

There are so many different statistics available on La Liga games, including recent form, head-to-head records, and expected goals. You should always pay attention to these when deciding how to bet. Form shows whether a team is getting results, but it doesn’t always tell the whole story.

Sometimes, luck is a big factor when betting on soccer, so it makes sense to check the underlying statistics too. If a team is over-performing their expected goals, you might consider betting against them, as their luck will eventually run out. Last season, La Liga matches saw an average of 2.69 goals scored per game, and the home side won 43% of the time.

Team News and Fixtures

While soccer is a team sport, even the best teams will still rely on star players to make a difference. La Liga has often featured some of the world’s best players, and a team losing a star performer can be a major blow. Check the team news before you bet to see if any key players are injured.

You should also consider the fixture list, and playing too many games in a short space of time results in fatigue, injuries, and poor form. If a team has recently played in a midweek European game, they might struggle on the weekend, even if they’re the favourite to win.

Markets and Live Betting

While Stake offers a wide variety of markets to choose from, you should be selective about which you bet on. It’s a good idea to focus on one or two markets that you research well before the game. Check our betting previews, including major football derby picks, for more information on what markets may be relevant for El Clásico and other major derbies.

You can also consider live betting, as the live stats will provide more information when assessing available markets and betting lines.
