Who will win La Liga 2026/27
Barcelona is our La Liga 2026/27 title pick. While they’ve lost the goal-scoring ability of Robert Lewandowski, they still have plenty of capable attacking players, including Lamine Yamal, Raphinha and Mikel Oyarzabal. Hansi Flick has proven himself as a top manager, helping to transform Barcelona into serial title winners. He coaches the team to play a high line, which allows them to dominate the ball. With the new addition of Ballon d’Or-winning midfielder Rodri, their squad looks better than ever. We predict that Barcelona will be difficult to beat this season.
Of course, Real Madrid will look to upset the odds and beat their rivals to the title. Jose Mourinho has returned to coach Los Blancos once more, and Mbappe will be gunning for yet another top goalscorer trophy. Atletico Madrid can’t be ruled out from our Spanish La Liga predictions either. They’ve made some key summer signings as they look to win their first title since the 2020/21 season.
La Liga 2026/27 title race: the contenders
Barcelona are the early betting favourites and our La Liga winner prediction thanks to their dominance last season, as they finished 8 points clear of their rivals. They also scored an impressive 95 goals, with Hansi Flick getting the best out of the entire squad. However, this season, Barcelona will have to face the return of Mourinho.
Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013. At that time, Barcelona were managed by Pep Guardiola and were at their very best. However, Mourinho coached Real to a La Liga title in the 2011/12 season. The Real Madrid and Barcelona rivalry was at its peak back then, with every El Clásico feeling like the biggest match in the world. If Mourinho can bring back that fire to his team, Real Madrid could upset the outright winner odds.
Real Madrid arguably has the best attack in the league, with Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham all capable of scoring in any match. They’ve also just signed Yan Diamonde to play on the right wing. However, their squad is arguably unbalanced, and they’ve never successfully replaced Kroos or Modric. Xabi Alonso was replaced with Arbeloa on an interim basis. Now, with Mourinho in charge, they could become a serious title contender again.
Although they haven’t won La Liga since 2021, Atletico Madrid are still a potential title contender for the 2026/27 season. Under Diego Simeone, Atletico are always difficult to break down. After adding Cristian Romero, Alejandro Grimaldo and Morten Hjulmand in the summer transfer window, their defence should be better than ever.
La Liga 2026/27 Champions League and European qualification predictions
We expect Barcelona and Real Madrid to take the top 2 spots, leaving at least 4 other teams that can qualify for European competitions. The top 4 teams in La Liga automatically qualify for the next season’s Champions League league phase. Meanwhile, 5th place qualifies for the Europa League, and 6th qualifies for the Conference League playoff round.
Here’s our La Liga 2026/27 top four prediction:
Barcelona
Real Madrid
Atletico Madrid
Villarreal
We’re also expecting the following teams to qualify for Europe:
Sevilla
Athletic Bilbao
La Liga 2026/27 relegation predictions
We predict that Malaga will go down this season. The newly promoted club has suffered financial hardship over the past few years, leading to the layoff of the entire first team. Now back in La Liga for the first time in 8 years, they'll rely on free transfers and loans to improve their squad.
We’re also predicting Racing Santander to be relegated. They were just promoted from the Segunda División, having gotten close over the past few seasons. They have a quality attack, but their defence has caused them problems. So far, they haven’t addressed these issues in the transfer window. In addition, their best player from last season, Peio Canales, has returned to Athletic Bilbao following his loan.
Levante were saved from relegation by their head-to-head record last season, but our relegation prediction is that they’ll go down in 2026/27. Carlos Espi scored 11 league goals for them last season but was sold this summer. Overall, their transfer dealings haven’t looked promising for their chances, and they’ll need luck to survive another season in La Liga.
La Liga 2026/27 dark horses and surprise picks
Villarreal are an interesting dark horse pick. Although they’re outside of the usual La Liga title contenders and have never won the league, they finished in 3rd place last season. While they were 14 points behind Real Madrid and 22 points behind the champions, they are our leading dark horse for another top-four finish. They’ve managed to retain all the key players of their squad while new manager Iñigo Pérez has taken over from Marcelino. Pérez was highly regarded at Rayo Vallecano, taking them to the 2025/26 Conference League final.
Atletico Madrid are also a solid pick for a potential challenger to Real Madrid and Barcelona. Diego Simeone has extensive La Liga experience and has bolstered his squad with key signings. Atletico will also most likely keep hold of Julian Alvarez, despite interest from Barcelona. This will ensure the perennial dark horse picks are a top contender in the La Liga title race.
La Liga 2026/27 Pichichi prediction
With Lewandowski heading to the MLS this season, Kylian Mbappe is clear in the race for the Pichichi. He’s our La Liga top scorer prediction because it’s hard to see any players beating his goalscoring unless he suffers a major injury. Over his past 2 seasons in La Liga, Mbappe has won the top goal scorer award twice and scored a total of 56 goals.
Lamine Yamal is a contender for the top goal scorer award this season. He’ll be one of Barcelona’s main goal threats, so expect him to do good numbers if he stays fit. However, the teenager’s best goal-scoring tally so far was 16 in the 2025/26 season, so we can’t see him beating Mbappe just yet.
